An electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG), is a test that records the electrical activity of the heart. It is used to detect and locate the source of heart problems.San Francisco-based AliveCor, originator of the iPhone ECG, is going to the dogs.
An ECG shows how fast the heart is beating, the heart’s rhythm (steady or irregular), and it records the strength and timing of the electrical signals as they pass through each part of the heart. The company is now marketing an iPhone-based veterinary heart monitor to veterinary health professionals and pet owners.
The AliveCor Veterinary Heart Monitor is a plastic case with two metal electrodes that snaps onto the back of an iPhone 4 or 4S. It takes single-lead ECG waveforms for canine, feline and equine patients, either in a clinic or at home.
The corresponding app the displays the waveform, allowing to add notes to the graph. All data is then automatically uploaded to an AliveCor cloud server.
